Most couples picture Jeju in cherry blossom or autumn grass. But some of our favourite Jeju pre-wedding photoshoots happen in January: deep-red camellias against dark green leaves, a turquoise sea with nobody on the sand, and soft low winter light that flatters everyone. Here is what a winter shoot really looks like.
Why Shoot in Winter?
- Colour you can't get any other time. Camellias are Jeju's winter flower — red, pink and white blossoms on glossy evergreen trees, often with fallen petals carpeting the path.
- Empty locations. Beaches and oreums that are crowded in spring and autumn are almost private in January.
- Beautiful light all day. The winter sun sits low, so even midday light is warm and directional instead of harsh.
- Easier dates. Winter is Jeju's low season, so popular studios, gown shops and photographers have more open days.
Best Camellia Locations
Camellias grow all over the south of the island — you'll see them along roadsides in Seogwipo — but a few places are made for photographs.
Camellia Hill (카멜리아힐), Andeok
The island's best-known camellia garden, with varieties from Korea and around the world planted in themed sections and winding paths. It is very photogenic, but it is also the most visited, so we go early in the morning.
- Best for: romantic close-ups framed by blossoms
- Watch out: paid entry and weekend crowds
Wimi Camellia Colony (위미 동백군락지), Namwon
A historic windbreak of old camellia trees planted generations ago, now tall enough to form a tunnel. It feels wilder and more natural than a garden — great for walking shots and candid moments.
Dongbaek Forest & the Camellia Arboretum, Namwon / Taewi-ro
Two neighbouring private gardens where camellia trees are trimmed into rounded shapes. When they are in full bloom the whole hillside turns pink-red, which reads beautifully in wide shots. Peak is usually January to February.
Will It Snow?
Honest answer: probably not on the beach, possibly on the mountain. Jeju is Korea's warmest region, and snow at sea level only happens on a handful of days each winter, if at all. Hallasan is different — the roads that climb towards it (1100-ro and the Eorimok area) regularly have snow from December to February.
- We never promise snow. If the mountain roads are white on your shoot day and safe to drive, we add a snow location.
- Roads can close. After heavy snowfall the mountain roads may require chains or close entirely — another reason the final course is decided on the morning of the shoot.
- Snow + camellia in one day is possible because the mountain and the southern coast are under an hour apart.
The Sea in Winter
Jeju's beaches are at their clearest in winter. The water is bright turquoise, the sand is empty, and the sunset comes early — around 5:30 PM in December — so a golden-hour finish fits easily into a shoot day.
The trade-off is wind. Winter sea wind is strong and cold, so beach scenes are kept short and planned around sheltered coves.
What to Wear (and How to Stay Warm)
- Long sleeves and lace gowns look elegant in winter and add a little warmth.
- Heat packs under the gown and inside the jacket make a big difference between scenes.
- A long coat or faux-fur stole works as an outfit change, not just a cover-up.
- Grooms: darker suits (navy, charcoal, burgundy) pair beautifully with red camellias.
- Pack a warm coat and gloves to wear between scenes, so you only take them off for the actual shot.

Planning Tips
- Book 2–3 months ahead. Winter is easier than spring, but Christmas and Lunar New Year weeks still fill up.
- Keep a backup day if your trip allows — winter weather changes quickly.
- Check Lunar New Year dates (usually late January or February) — some shops close for a few days.
- Thinking about spring instead? Our month-by-month season guide compares every option.
